The ServerSideExtender is a control that allows ASP.NET developers to invoke existing server-side validators through an asynchronous callback, without performing a full postback. This control provides (directly or by extending the ASP.NET AJAX Toolkit) an implementation of the following patterns:
  • Live Form. When the user enters invalid values in the input fields, error messages appear in the form dynamically.
  • User Action. As the user tabs out of the text box being validated, the extender responds to the event by triggering the validation.
  • XMLHTTPRequest. The extender uses an XMLHTTPRequest object to communicate with the server to perform the validation.
  • Display Morphing. The extender manipulates the browser Document Object Model (DOM) to show or hide validation errors.
  • JSON Message. The extender and the server endpoint exchange messages formatted as JSON.
