Deployment. Error: Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1.

Hello everyone,

I'm developing a web project with WCSF under windows xp s2, when I deploy my site on my organization's server(Win Server 2003), I get the following error:

Data at the root level is invalid. Line 1, position 1.

Line 1: vti_encoding:SR|utf8-nl
....
Source File: c:\inetpub\wwwroot\MyProject\MyFolder\vticnf\web.config Line: 1

I didn't have this issue before developing without WCSF.
If I try to remove the web.config file from this location, I get the Object Reference not set to an Instance of an Object error

Any clue?

best regards
Rodrigo

Hi Rodrigo,

As far as I know, the “vticnf “ is a folder created automatically by the FrontPage Extensions. Since it’s complaining about the first line, it may be something related to this. I have two questions: do you have FrontPage Extensions installed in your server? Was the solution working ok in your XP box?

In a quick search I found these links that hopefully may be useful:

Hope it helps!

Hi Luciano, thanks for your response,

answering your questions:
1. I do have the FrontPage Extensions installed on the server, that's because I couldn't publish any site to this server.
2. I Published my web site locally too and It runs well.

well, on both articles the web.config file is deleted from the vticnf folder. I don't think that could be the problem, because when I Publish any other site (not using the Web Client SF) this folder is created and the page runs with no problem.

I also tried to Install the WCSF on the server but the error page still pops up.

Is there anything I'm not considering?

regards.

Hi, I'm having the same problem.

Can any one solve this?

Deleting the web.config file on vticnf folder, I got another error:

"Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

I could not solve this too...
